Hawks outlast Nor’easters, 15-8

BRISTOL, R.I. – Roger Williams University used an 8-1 run between the second and third quarters to pull away from the University of New England on its way to a 15-8 victory in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) men's lacrosse action at Bayside Field on Saturday.
 
Ryan Vendetti and Pehrson Szuluk led the Hawks with four goals each. Kevin Murphy had three goals and an assist in the victory. Andrew Lawrence and Colin Watt paced the Nor'easters with three goals apiece.
 
Matt Halpin hit Vendetti for a goal and just 46 seconds later scored one for himself to put Roger Williams (8-5, 4-2 CCC) ahead 2-0 early in the first. Sam McGregor connected with Lawrence to put UNE on the board at the 6:37 mark of the first. Vendetti added his second of the day later in the period to extend the lead to 3-1. Collin Jackson drew the Nor'easters (7-8, 1-5 CCC) within one late in the first on a goal with help from Ryan Hazard.
 
Lawrence tied the game 3-3 with his second goal of the day at the 12:59 mark of the second quarter. Hazard provided another assist on the tying goal. The Hawks began to pull away from there with three goals by Kevin Murphy in a span of 1:33 to double the score at 6-3. After a man-up score by Hazard, the Hawks scored the final two of the second and led 8-4 at halftime.
 
Roger Williams continued to extend its lead with the first three goals of the second half. UNE made another push as Jordan White connected with Watt for back-to-back goals to trim the deficit to 11-6 with 5:08 left in the third, but were unable to draw any closer.
 
The Hawks led by as many as nine at 15-6 with 9:57 to play. Lawrence and Watt scored the final two goals of the game for UNE.
 
Max Kimmel backstopped the victory for the Hawks with seven saves. Alex Thoms had 10 stops for UNE.
 
The Nor'easters return to Blue Bolt Field for the final time this season on Tuesday against Gordon at 4 p.m.
