BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Bowdoin College put together a 7th-inning rally to take the opener of a softball doubleheader with the University of New England, 5-4, before claiming an 11-5 (6 innings) result in the nightcap on Wednesday (Apr. 12) at Pickard Field.

The Polar Bears improve to 16-12 on the year with their second consecutive sweep. Grace Tutt led all players with five hits on the day for the Nor'easters (6-18), who resume Commonwealth Coast Conference action on Saturday at Curry College.

UNE didn't trail until the last at-bat of GAME 1 (BOW 5-4). Kenzie Bessette put the visitors ahead right away, leading off the contest with a bunt single and later scoring. The hosts, however, evened things up in the bottom of the 1st on the first of two hits by Katryna Dukehart.

The teams left a combined five runners on base in the 2nd before the pitchers began to settle in, and it remained 1-1 until the top of the 5th, when three straight two-out singles gave the Nor'easters a 2-1 edge. Abby Miner and Tutt connected before Abby Walsh plated Miner. The cushion became 3-1 in the 6th off the bat of Becca Dumont, only to see Bowdoin counter with three hits to tie it up (3-3), including a two-run single by Lilly Armstrong -- her second hit.

Tutt's third hit was a double off the wall to open the 7th, and a pinch-hit RBI-single from Megan Chamberlain made it 4-3 in favor of the Nor'easters. But a walk and an error, followed by run-scoring singles by Sydney Lang and Liv Barrett put the Polar Bears over the top. Barrett matched Tutt with the game-high of three hits.

Maddie Current secured the win in the circle, scattering 10 hits and four free passes while striking out six. Her counterpart for UNE, Kara MacDonald, yielded three earned runs in the setback.

Bowdoin jumped in front at the start of GAME 2 (BOW 11-5) with a two-run shot from Angelina Mayers -- her nation-leading 13th homer of the season. Four hits and a couple miscues led to six more runs in the home half of the 2nd. Armstrong produced another two-run single to get things rolling, and was immediately followed by run-scoring hits from JK Bradley and Mayers.

The Nor'easters chipped into the deficit in the 4th, as a double from Miner and single by Tutt put one across, and Tutt later scored on a sacrifice fly by Emma Koenig (8-2). In the 5th, Miner came through with a two-out single to knock in Bessette (single), right before Tutt sliced the gap to 8-5 with one swing over the left-center fence -- her third dinger of the year.

But the Polar Bears converted three hits and an error into three runs during their next at-bat to restore some separation. After UNE's 6th, the game was called due to darkness.

Bradley and Miner each had three hits to pace their respective sides. Anna Halliday went the distance for the hosts, fanning three against eight hits and a walk. Mia Micucci took the loss for the visitors in two innings of work, and Mackenzie Susko got nine outs from the 14 batters she faced the rest of the way.
