BIDDEFORD, Maine – A three-goal second period by the #13 University of New England men's ice hockey team was the difference in a 3-2 victory over #5 Curry College in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) tilt at the Harold Alfond Forum on Saturday.

The Nor'easters (15-5-1, 13-4-0 CCC) have now won six straight and move into a tie with the Colonels (16-4-1, 12-3-1 CCC) for second place in the conference with 38 points with four games to play. The victory is the second for UNE against a top-5 opponent in program history, following the triumph against #2 Utica last season in the NCAA tournament.

Curry started the scoring late in the first period. Eelis Laaksonen took a shot from the right circle that was initially saved by Billy Girard IV, but popped up in the air and fell down into the net to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.

UNE grabbed control of the game in the second. A shot by Ryan Kuzmich was saved off the right pad by Reid Cooper but he couldn't corral the puck, and Jake Fuss cleaned up the rebound to tie the game with 15:54 to play in the second [Watch]. Alex Sheehy also provided an assist.

Logan DiScanio put in the rebound off a blast from Collin Heinold with just under nine minutes remaining to give the Nor'easters the lead (2-1). Shea Courtmanche helped on the go-ahead goal [Watch]. Another rebound led to the final UNE goal as Anthony Sciucco grabbed the loose puck after a shot by Daniel Winslow and wrapped around to score easily on the opposite side with 6:17 left in the second. The 3-1 score nearly held for the remainder of the game, but Mark Zhukov added a late extra-attacker tally for the Curry with 13.8 seconds left. Kevin Pitts and Nick Favaro assisted on the final goal.

Girard had 25 saves to backstop the victory for UNE. Cooper made 23 stops in the loss.

The Nor'easters have another top-5 matchup next Friday as they visit #4 Endicott College at 7 p.m.
