LEWISTON, Maine -- Bates College scored 10 of the game's last 11 points to secure a 58-51 non-conference women's basketball result against the University of New England on Saturday afternoon (Dec. 9) at Alumni Gymnasium.
The Bobcats had their largest lead midway through the 3rd quarter at 40-30, but the Nor'easters chipped away at the deficit to trail by only four (48-44) entering the 4th.
Sydney Jenisch contributed all of her six points during the last few minutes of the penultimate period.
UNE held the hosts scoreless for more than five minutes, crossing over into the final frame, and took a 50-48 edge with 7:32 to go. Sarah Hughes then tied things at the 5:43 mark, and nearly two more minutes elapsed before Davina Kabantu hit a wing three-pointer to give Bates a 53-50 advantage. It was a two-point game with 3:04 on the clock, but the Nor'easters came up empty on their last 11 field goals while the Bobcats converted just enough free throws down the stretch to seal it.
For Bates (8-1), Morgan Kennedy and Alexandra Long had 13 and 10 points, respectively, and each recorded three blocks. Kabantu posted a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds, and Hughes went for 11 points, nine boards, and four assists.
UNE (6-4) was led by 17 points out of
Faye Veilleux, who also had nine caroms.
Kaylee Beyor was one point away from a double-double in the first half, and finished with 11 points to go with a career-best 17 rebounds.
Juliana Tracey added nine points.
Both sides collected 56 rebounds as the shooting percentages settled below 30 percent. The Nor'easters accounted for half of theirs on the offensive end, leading 28-20, but the defenses only yielded a combined 31 points off those second-chance opportunities.
Twice in the 1st quarter, UNE held a three-point edge (6-3, 15-12). Things were level at 16-all through 10 minutes, and the Bobcats never trailed in the 2nd stanza on the way to a 34-26 cushion at the midway break. Kabuntu tallied seven in the period, and Long made a late trey to pad the advantage.
The Nor'easters now pause for a few weeks, resuming on January 2 (5:30 p.m.) with a home match against the University of Hartford.
