Jordyn Franzen finished one shy of matching a career-high with 27 points and collected a personal-best 16 rebounds to fuel the University of New England in a 75-63 women's basketball triumph over Gordon College in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action at Coach Beaudry's Court inside the Harold Alfond Forum on Tuesday evening (Dec. 5).
The Nor'easters (6-3, 2-1 CCC) now close out the first semester with a non-league road game at Bates College on Saturday.
Franzen had 14 points and nine rebounds in the first half alone, and the overall double-double was the first of her season. She had seven of the team's 21 offensive boards, which aided a 22-10 advantage in second-chance points for UNE. The hosts had a 38-22 scoring cushion in the paint, helped by 10 points from
Kaylee Beyor and another eight out of
Aisling Harrington. Beyor joined Franzen with a double-double, securing 10 rebounds.Â
Gabby Soter added seven free throws and
Juliana Tracey contributed seven assists. The Nor'easters also forced Gordon into 29 turnovers and scored 32 points off of those possessions.
For the Fighting Scots (1-7, 0-2), Ami Rivera and Naomi Nicholson combined for 21 points in the second half to end up with 17 and 15, respectively. Isabella Rivera supplied 11 points and 10 caroms.
A 5-0 start to the night for Gordon was flipped in favor of the home squad by the end of the 1st quarter (16-11) after a 10-2 finish to the stanza, and UNE led the rest of the contest.
The Nor'easters broke things open in the 3rd, using the initial 7:30 to balloon a 34-27 halftime lead up to 58-34 (24-7 stretch). Franzen had 10 during the span, and Tracey added all of her six points.
