Golden Bears best UNE, 80-61

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- Western New England University responded to its only deficit of the game by scoring 14 of the next 15 points during the 2nd quarter and went on to an 80-61 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) women's basketball result against the University of New England at the AHL Center on Saturday afternoon (Dec. 2).

The Golden Bears (5-3, 1-1 CCC) got out to an 8-1 start and maintained a 17-11 advantage at the end of the 1st. The Nor'easters (5-3, 1-1) countered with the initial eight of the 2nd -- including a trey and then three-point play from Jordyn Franzen -- to inch ahead at 19-17, but over the next five minutes missed both field goal attempts and had six turnovers while the hosts plotted their way to a 35-23 halftime cushion.

UNE got as close as eight in the 3rd, however, Western New England shot 18-of-34 and only lost possession three times following the midway break to pull away.

For the Golden Bears, Abby Garaban tallied 15 of her game high 23 points after halftime, and just missed one field goal and one free throw in the contest. She also had a team-best six rebounds and four assists. Tara Laugeni and Lilly Hedge supported with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Franzen paced the Nor'easters with 17 points, and shared the game lead with nine caroms. Faye Veilleux chipped in with 13 points and six boards. Kaylee Beyor also grabbed nine rebounds, helping UNE to a 40-38 edge on the glass. The visitors shot 34 percent (21-for-62) from the floor on the day.

UNE will be back at home on Tuesday (5:30 p.m.) to entertain Gordon College.
