BIDDEFORD, Maine -- After trailing by as many as eight in the 1st quarter, No.4 Tufts University finished the 3rd stanza on a 19-4 run to pull ahead on the way to a 64-50 women's basketball result versus the University of New England at Coach Beaudry's Court inside the Harold Alfond Forum on Sunday afternoon (Nov. 26).
Ranked in the D3hoops.com Preseason Poll, the Jumbos (5-1) have now won five straight since an opening loss to No.5 Rhode Island College. The Nor'easters --Â who begin Commonwealth Coast Conference action on Wednesday (5:30 p.m.) at home against Endicott College -- see their winning streak halted at three, slipping to 4-2 overall.
Samantha Sousa collected a game-high 15 points and nine rebounds to lead the visitors, while Callie O'Brien added 12 points. Annie Aspesi tossed in 3-of-3 from downtown in the second half to contribute nine points. Maggie Russell also had nine points, to go with nine boards, but was held to just 1-of-8 shooting from the floor and forced into six turnovers -- the two-time All-America selection came in averaging 18.9 points, with double figures in each contest.
Tufts finished on top of a 52-29 margin on the glass, which included 17 offensive caroms that generated 15 second-chance points. The Jumbos posted a 30-14 scoring edge in the paint.
For the Nor'easters,
Faye Veilleux went for 14 points with six rebounds.
Jordyn Franzen tallied all of her 11 points prior to halftime, and grabbed eight boards.
Sydney Jenisch wound up with nine points and four assists.
Franzen fueled a strong start by UNE with eight points over the first 7:34 of the match, and her second trey of the span capped an 8-0 spurt to go up 18-10. The Nor'easters limited Tufts to 3-of-13 accuracy from the field in the opening period, but the Jumbos were able to hang around (20-16) by converting all 10 of their free throw attempts.
A quick six midway through the 2nd pushed the spread to 29-22 in favor of the hosts, however, the final eight before the break fell for Tufts to move in front at intermission (30-29).
UNE operated with a 36-32 lead in the 3rd until Aspesi's first triple at 6:21 sparked the deciding stretch; the Jumbos shot 9-for-16 in the frame and led 51-40 through 30 minutes. The gap was eight with 6:29 remaining in the 4th, but Aspesi registered the next six points to pad the cushion.
Tufts wrapped the contest shooting 37.7 percent on field goal tries, while the Nor'easters concluded at a rate just below 30 percent.
