BIDDEFORD, Maine -- No.13 University of New England scored once in each period to capture a 3-1 non-conference men's ice hockey victory against the University of Southern Maine at the Harold Alfond Forum on Saturday night (Nov. 25).
The Nor'easters (5-2-1) level off the all-time series with the Huskies (3-4-1) at 8-all, having won the last five meetings and seven of the last eight. The programs were in the same league through 2015-16, and have squared off just four times since.
Trailing 2-1 in the latter stages of the 3rd, USM began 78 seconds of a 5-on-3 power play. Two shot attempts by the Huskies were blocked by UNE'sÂ
David Wilcox, helping the hosts settle into defending the disadvantage and clear it the length of the ice. Southern Maine couldn't get back into the zone before the Nor'easters got fresh legs into position, and a poke-check from
Jack Murphy freed the puck for
Jayden Price to race the other way and deliver a shorthanded backbreakerÂ

A few minutes later,
Joe Stanizzi point-blank denied Zach Demarais in transition to preserve the two-goal cushion
[Watch]. Stanizzi amassed 36 saves to improve his career record to 7-0-0. Wilcox registered a game-high four blocked shots in support of his netminder.
The lone tally of the 1st period gave UNE the lead for good, as perfect passing found
Anthony Sciucco at the left post for an easy finishÂ

Juraj Elias and
Ryan Kuzmich set up the tally; Elias tops the squad in assists (7) and points (10).
In the 2nd,
Jacob Pellerin kept a USM clearing attempt in the zone as some players leaned the other direction, carried into open space below the left dot, and fired one through for a 2-0 lead

Eight minutes later (13:54), Matt Sullivan got the Huskies on the board with a wrap-around score, and it was 2-1 at the 2nd intermission. Shots were tilted in USM's favor through 40 minutes, 28-23.
Kyle Penton made 29 stops in the contest for the visitors.
The Nor'easters resume Commonwealth Coast Conference play on Friday at Nichols College.
