MIDDLETOWN, Conn. -- The University of New England women's basketball squad opened with a 13-1 spurt in less than four minutes and never relinquished control of the scoreboard in a 76-68 triumph over Wesleyan University (Conn.) to wrap up the Courtyard by Marriott Classic at Silloway Gymnasium on Sunday afternoon (Nov. 12).
Jordyn Franzen topped the Nor'easters (2-1) with 21 points on 9-of-17 shooting, to go with five boards and three steals.
Sydney Jenisch only missed one field goal and one free throw on the way to 16 points, while adding seven rebounds and three steals.
Juliana Tracey went for 15 points, seven caroms, and seven assists, and
Faye Veilleux tacked on 13 points with eight rebounds.
Kaylee Beyor also secured eight boards, helping UNE to a 42-28 advantage on the glass. The visitors were able to mitigate 27 turnovers by draining 8-of-13 looks from downtown -- Franzen and Tracey each canned 3-of-4.
The Cardinals (1-1) -- who scored 102 to begin their season on Saturday -- received a team-high 19 points off the bench from Felicia Fongemie. Alana Jones registered 14 points, and Olivia Quinn totaled 11 points, seven rebounds, and six steals.
The Nor'easters shot 53 percent from the field in the 1st quarter to build their lead, which maxed out at 14 (17-3, 24-10). Wesleyan closed within four (26-22) in the 2nd, but a three from Tracey were the next points on the board to keep the spread in multiple possessions. The difference was 38-30 at the midway break.
The gap stayed in single digits for the duration of the 3rd and the Cardinals sliced it to three for a moment (40-37) with a Quinn three-pointer, only to see Jenisch counter immediately with a layup for UNE. By the end of the frame, the hosts had only gained a couple on the deficit (54-48). Back-to-back triples from Franzen and Tracey kicked off the 4th, and the Nor'easter cushion soon increased to 15 (67-52) with 4:43 left on the clock.
UNE plays at home for the first time this year on Wednesday (5:30 p.m.) against Saint Joseph's College of Maine.
