BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The University of New England notched its highest attacking percentage in a league match to-date (.338) and secured a 3-0 victory (25-18, 25-22, 25-22) over Suffolk University in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) women's volleyball contest Wednesday night (Nov. 1) on Coach Beaudry's Court inside the Harold Alfond Forum.
The Nor'easters (13-8, 2-5 CCC) now prepare for the regular-season finale at Nichols College (1-6 CCC) with a spot in the postseason tournament on the line.
Jillian Bender and
Viktoria Pavlyuk both hit just above .300 on the evening and paced UNE with 10 and nine kills, respectively. Pavlyuk added a team-high 10 digs, and tallied five of the squad's nine aces for a match-best 14.5 points.
Kailyn Reilly connected for seven kills on eight swings (.875) and tacked on two solo blocks.
Kassidy Bradshaw factored on multiple levels, as well, putting up 26 assists, seven digs, and four kills (on seven error-free attempts).
On the back end,
Addie Miller picked up nine digs while both
Mary Haley and
Griffin Chaffin-Quiray contributed five each. In serve receiving, the trio only had a couple miscues over 33 tries (.939).
For Suffolk (15-12, 4-3 CCC), Jessica Weber totaled 13 points, mostly behind six kills and six aces. Jasmine James had seven kills to lead the way in that category, and Sami Shore went for six kills and four block assists. Jayla Martinez was the setter for 19 successful attacks, and Morgan Kelsey controlled 13 digs.
UNE led from the start in the opening frame, and back-to-back winners from Bender
[Watch], coupled with one of Bradshaw's kills, made it 12-7. Even though the six ensuing points went for the Rams and flipped the advantage, the hosts responded with five in-a-row to regain the edge for good (17-13). Pavlyuk had kills to bookend that run
[Watch 17], and then one more kill
[Watch], along with two aces, as another five straight pushed the spread to 24-17.
The 2nd set featured 11 ties and six lead-changes, but also included an 8-1 Suffolk spurt that established the visitors with a 15-9 cushion. However, nine points later, the Nor'easters were back in front (17-16) --
Hannah Nowell was responsible for two of those points with kills
[Watch 14/15]. UNE separated just enough from 19-all with three unansweredÂ
[Watch 20/21/22] and the sides traded scores the rest of the way. The home team had a positive action for each of its last six points, with five kills and an ace.
[Watch 24, Watch 25]
UNE hit .481 in the middle session, while the visitors operated at a .367 clip.
The Rams held leads of 4-1 and 15-11 in the 3rd stanza, but three blocks by the Nor'easters helped level things at 16-16
[Watch 15/16]. A service winner from Reilly set UNE ahead (19-18), and then consecutive kills by PavlyukÂ
[Watch] and Bender stretched it to 23-19. Suffolk drew within one on a kill by James, only to see Bender counter with one more (24-22)
[Watch], and a Rams attack error sealed the match for the hosts (-.036 in the set).
