DUDLEY, Mass. --
Viktoria Pavlyuk and
Kassidy Bradshaw both notched double-doubles as the University of New England women's volleyball team topped Nichols College by a 3-0 margin (25-22, 25-21, 26-24) to wrap up the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) regular season on Saturday afternoon (Nov. 4) at the NC Athletic Center.
With the victory, the Nor'easters (14-8) improve to 3-5 in league action and secure a place in the upcoming conference tournament. UNE will be the No.7 seed traveling to No.2 Endicott College (7-1 CCC), which picked up a 3-2 result in the regular season meeting between the teams less than two weeks ago.
The Bison (15-11) fall just short of the postseason, concluding the year at 1-7 in the CCC.
Pavlyuk went for 11 kills and 11 digs, along with four aces, while Bradshaw framed 23 assists to go with 11 digs.
Addie Miller also had 11 digs, and
Taressa Szewczyk added seven more to the balanced back-row effort.
Kailyn Reilly put up six kills on 10 swings, in addition to registering three aces and three blocks.
Mary Haley also contributed three service winners for UNE.
Haylee Granato had a team-high eight kills to pace Nichols, which got 19 assists out of Ruby St. Onge. Liz Diorio picked up 23 digs on the defensive side.
Both teams were attacking in the negative in the 1st set. The largest lead was gained by the Bison (6-2), but the Nor'easters posted the last four points to take the session. After an error tied things at 22-all, one of Reilly's block gave UNE its first edge since 12-11. Pavlyuk followed with a pair of aces to close it out.
The only lead-change of the 2nd came early, as the visitors led from 5-4 to the finish. While the Nor'easters pushed the spread all the way up to 19-8, the hosts countered with a 13-5 run to draw within three (24-21), but an error gave UNE a two-set cushion.
Twelve ties clogged the 3rd, and the Bison otherwise had the edge throughout -- as many as three (7-4, 9-6, 15-12). Pavlyuk's sixth kill of the period trimmed the NC lead to 23-22, and
Hannah Nowell followed to level it. Granato positioned Nichols with a set-point (24-23), but Nowell came through again to force the equivalent of overtime. After a service winner from Reilly, Bradshaw found Nowell for one more kill to seal the match for the Nor'easters.
