Hartford fends off UNE, 4-1

BIDDEFORD, Maine – The University of Hartford scored three times in the second half to break an early tie and capture a 4-1 victory over the University of New England women's soccer action at Blue Storm Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
 
Hartford (8-2-0) is the newest member of the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC), however still in the process of reclassifying from Division I to Division III, and so the game does not count towards the 2023 league standings.

The Hawks opened the scoring on the day as Leah Barbieri blasted a shot from the corner of the box to give the visitors a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute.
 
UNE (5-3-3) was awarded a penalty kick in the 35th minute after a Nor'easter player was fouled during a scramble after a corner kick. Lizzie Frattaroli nailed the kick past a diving Hawks goalkeeper to the right side of the net to tie the game. [Watch]
 
Early in the second half, the Nor'easters had close chances on shots by Emily Martin and Tori Keyes but weren't able to pull ahead. Hartford grabbed the lead back in the 58th minute, as Christina Stone nearly scored directly off a corner kick, but Sydney Gillingham was able to save the initial attempt. Kathleen Brush scored on the rebound to make the score 2-1.
 
Imani Jenkins scored the final two goals for the Hawks. She had her first goal of the in the 63rd minute off an assist from Juliana Chiarella, and then added a penalty-kick goal in 70th minute.
 
Shots favored the Hawks 17-11 and 7-4 on goal. Gillingham had most of the action in net for UNE, making two saves in 67 minutes. Ariel Martin also had one stop. Sejal Johnson had three saves for Hartford.
 
The Nor'easters return to Hazard Field on Tuesday for a CCC tilt with Wentworth at 4 p.m.
