BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Wentworth Institute of Technology won the first and third sets by the minimum during a 3-0 result (25-23, 25-15, 27-25) versus the University of New England in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) women's volleyball action Wednesday night (Oct. 4) on Coach Beaudry's Court inside the Harold Alfond Forum.
The Leopards (11-5, 2-0 CCC) received a match-best 15.5 points from Emma Sanders, who put down 11 kills to go with three aces and three block assists. Kate McLane and Ema Thompson went for nine and eight kills, respectively, while Olivia Vaughn framed 27 assists. Amanda Zweifler notched 14 digs and five of the team's 12 service aces.
For the Nor'easters (6-5, 0-2),
Ellijah Hanley totaled 11 kills,
Viktoria Pavlyuk added eight, and
Hannah Nowell contributed six.
Kassidy Bradshaw guided the attack with 27 assists. On the defensive end,
Addie Miller picked up 13 digs, while both
Morgan Lynch and
Reese LeMay had eight.
UNE led by as many as three (3-0, 6-3) in the opening stanza, which featured 10 ties. The third and final lead-change came after back-to-back kills by Thompson and Sanders, giving WIT a 16-15 edge. The Wentworth margin topped out at four (22-18), only to see the hosts score five of the next seven and draw within one (24-23) after a block by Bradshaw and
Kailyn Reilly. But Sanders registered the final point to get the visitors in front.
The Nor'easters again had a 3-0 cushion in the 2nd, however 11 of the ensuing 12 points touched down for Wentworth. UNE drew back within three on a couple of occasions, but the Leopards hit at a .345 clip (one error) in the set to maintain full control.
UNE took an 8-4 lead in the 3rd after four straight points, and a kill from Hanley made it 14-9 in favor of the home squad. While seven of the following eight points went to the Leopards (WIT 16-15), the Nor'easters almost immediately regained the edge to hold advantages of 20-18, 23-20, and 24-22. A winner from Sanders and ace by Zweifler tied things up, but a WIT error gave UNE another set point (25-24). A miscue by the Nor'easters and the only solo block of the contest by Wentworth's Riley Schoonmaker flipped the script, though, and a scrambling bid to stay alive by the hosts floated just long.
The Nor'easters are scheduled for a pair of matches at Lesley University on Saturday afternoon -- first Husson University and then the Lynx.
