Hawks rally to edge UNE in CCC play

BRISTOL, R.I. -- Trailing 2-1 after three sets, the Roger Williams University Hawks took the final two to rally for a 3-2 win (18-25, 25-22, 20-25, 25-13, 15-10) over the University of New England in Commonwealth Coast Conference women's volleyball action Saturday afternoon (Oct. 28) at the RWU Recreation Center.

After the Hawks leveled the match with a convincing 25-13 win in the fourth, the hosts raced out to a 9-2 advantage in the decisive fifth frame. Brianna Picchietti had three kills and a block to help fuel the run. UNE was able to slice its deficit to four (13-9) but kills by Jillian Smith and Kaylee Jackson sandwiched around a service error put the match away.

Jackson (14) and Smith (13) combined for 27 kills for Roger Williams, which improved to 9-13 overall, 3-5 in conference play. Ava Mattiucci contributed a match-best 31 assists, while Marianna Hernandez led all players with 21 digs.

The Nor'easters (12-8, 1-5 CCC) received a team-best 12 kills from Viktoria Pavyluk, who also chipped in two solo blocks. Kailyn Reilly had a strong all-around day, finishing with seven kills and four services aces while registering a .417 attack percentage. Kassidy Bradshaw finished with 27 assists and five aces, and Addie Miller dug out 14 balls to lead UNE in that category.

For the match UNE served-up 12 aces but was also hampered by 15 errors. Roger Williams hit at a .154 clip, while UNE recorded a .070 percentage.

The Nor'easters return to action Wednesday (Nov. 1) when they will host Suffolk University in a 7:00 p.m. start at Coach Beaudry's Court.
