BIDDEFORD, Maine --
Viktoria Pavlyuk registered a double-double of 12 kills and 15 digs to pace the University of New England in a 3-0 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) women's volleyball triumph against Curry College at Coach Beaudry's Court inside the Harold Alfond Forum on Thursday evening (Oct. 12). Set scores were 25-17, 25-15, and 25-13.
Both tallies were season-highs for Pavlyuk, who hit at a .429 clip in the match. All of her kills came during the first two sets, including a 7-0-9 (.778) line in the 2nd frame.
Ellijah Hanley supported with seven kills and three service aces, while
Kailyn Reilly knocked down six more winners.
Kassidy Bradshaw guided most of the attacks with 23 assists. Along the back line, after Pavlyuk,
Addie Miller picked up 11 digs to go with her team-best five aces.
The Nor'easters improve to 9-5 overall and 1-2 in league play with the result. The Colonels slip back to 4-16 (0-4 CCC).
After yielding the initial three points of the night, UNE rattled off eight in-a-row to take the lead. A kill from Pavlyuk and two of Miller's aces pushed the spread beyond five for the first time (22-14), and Pavlyuk soon finished off the stanza.
The Nor'easters unleashed a 9-0 spurt early in the 2nd to gain a 12-2 cushion -- Hanley started the run with a kill, and then served up a pair of aces along the way. Six of UNE's last eight points came from positive actions by Pavlyuk and Reilly, including Pavlyuk's finish to one of the longest rallies of the contest (18-8)
[Watch]. Pavlyuk then chalked up points 24 and 25 to establish the two-set advantage. The home squad orchestrated a .250 increase in attacking efficiency (.179 to .429) from set one to two, while limiting the visitors to a -.148 difference.
Arden Caley entered in the 3rd and accounted for two kills in another fast start by the hosts (5-0), which also saw two kills from Hanley and Pavlyuk's lone ace. Caley, who had four winners on six swings, cued up a string of eight straight points to increase the margin to 15-4, and five of Hanley's six kills in the set were on the board by the time the run ended. UNE's 11th service ace of the day, from
Griffin Chaffin-Quiray, eventually sealed the deal.
Curry was led by eight kills out of Lauren Guzman, who posted a 5-0-11 hitting line during the opening session. Avia Fraine had 10 digs.
The Nor'easters remain in Biddeford and will entertain the University of Hartford on Saturday (5 p.m.).
