BIDDEFORD, Maine -- After trailing by as many as 12 in the 2nd quarter, Roger Williams University secured a 58-38 women's basketball result against the University of New England as the two remaining Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) unbeatens squared off Tuesday evening (Jan. 3) on Coach Beaudry's Court inside the Harold Alfond Forum.
Winners of seven in-a-row, the Hawks (8-2) now stand at 4-0 in league play. The Nor'easters slip to 7-4 overall and 3-1 in CCC action.
Nikki Rosa paced RWU with 16 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field, and collected team highs of nine rebounds and three steals. Katie Galligan, who also had three steals, notched all of her 13 points during a separating stretch following halftime. Caroline Elie had 11 points, seven boards, and three blocks, while Kendi Barnard added six points, seven caroms, three blocks, and three assists.
The visitors had a 15-point scoring advantage (18-3) from behind the arc, led 17-0 in points off turnovers, and held a 41-31 rebounding edge in the contest.
For UNE,
Jordyn Franzen posted her third double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Eight others found their way into the scoring column, topped by
Keagan Dunbar with six points.
Roger Williams was up by one early on (7-6) until a 17-4 surge by the Nor'easters made it 23-11 moments into the 2nd stanza. Franzen accounted for more than half of the offense (12) to that point. However, the ensuing 14 points went for the Hawks, and things settled on 25-all at intermission.
RWU took the lead for good shortly after returning from the break, at 31-29, and then Galligan came alive. She registered all but two in a 15-5 run that pushed the cushion from four to 14 (50-36) with 6:37 remaining in the 4th -- including three triples to cap the 3rd.
Rosa recorded half (7) of the squad's points in the final frame, while the visitors limited UNE to just four points. After knocking down 53 percent of their shots in the 1st, the Nor'easters only connected at a 22 percent clip the rest of the way. Meanwhile, the Hawks shot 42 percent over the last 30 minutes, improving on the 25 percent from the initial period.
UNE visits Curry College on Thursday.
