EVERETT, Mass. -- The University of New England received goals from five different players on the way to a 5-1 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) win over Wentworth Institute of Technology in men's ice hockey action at Allied Veterans Rink on Saturday afternoon (Jan. 28).
The day included three special teams tallies and two first-time collegiate scorers on the side of the Nor'easters (13-5-1, 11-4-0 CCC), who won for the fourth consecutive contest.
For the second time in less than 24 hours, UNE and the Leopards completed the 1st period without any offense. The visiting squad took control with three in the 2nd, though, starting with the first goal from rookie defenseman
David Wilcox. Wilcox fired one through from the point with 6:25 gone, off a feed from
Collin Heinold and
Jayden Price. Less than two minutes later,
Noah Szretter and
Ryan Kuzmich helped get
Jared Christy out of the defensive zone, and Christy displayed some slick stick moves on the tail end to double the margin to 2-0.
Later in the frame, during a 5-on-3 power play, Christy passed to Heinold for a long-range try that just missed, but
Jake Fuss was right there to collect the bounce off the end boards and tuck it in.
Szretter, another rookie defenseman, notched his first goal was a laser wrist shot from the slot on a power play at the 2:25 mark of the 3rd, upping the cushion to 4-0. Kuzmich and Heinold added to their productive outings with assists on the play.
Wentworth managed to get on the board at the 3:46 mark, courtesy of Sean Brown, but that was all the Nor'easters would concede. With 4:02 left, UNE took a penalty and WIT pulled the goalie for a 6-on-4 situation, but
Daniel Winslow was first to a loose puck after the ensuing faceoff and sent it down into the empty net from his own blue line.
UNE killed off the rest of the penalty, plus another in the waning minutes, as
Billy Girard IV wrapped up his 22-save performance to improve to 11-5-1 between the pipes.
Jack McGovern logged 31 stops for the Leopards (4-14-1, 2-12-1).
The Nor'easters will visit Suffolk University on Friday and return home to face No.6 Curry College next Saturday night.
