Roger Williams pulls away from UNE to 94-75 result

BRISTOL, R.I. -- Mac Annus scored 32 points to lead the Roger Williams University men's basketball team in a 94-75 decision versus the University of New England in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) match on Saturday afternoon (Jan. 28) at the Campus Recreation Center.

Up by nine at the half, the Hawks (12-7, 9-3 CCC) surged out of the break with 10 of the first 11 to go up 55-37. But the Nor'easters (2-17, 0-12) didn't go away easily, compiling runs of 9-0 and 11-2 to claw back within one (62-61) at the 9:37 mark, capped by a Connor Curcio trey. However, Annus immediately countered with a three-pointer of his own, and soon back-to-back triples from Ty Higgins and Annus returned the cushion to double digits for good (73-63) with 7:45 to go.

Annus reached his point total with 12-of-15 shooting from the floor, which included 5-of-7 accuracy from deep. Higgins wound up with 15 points, while Nate Lopes accumulated 14 points, 15 rebounds, and five assists. John Ah Kao also had 14 points, to go with eight boards, and Philip Sughrue helped the offense with eight assists.

Roger Williams outscored the Nor'easters by 15 from downtown (33-18), where half of its 70 field goal attempts were taken. The Hawks also scored 24 points off 16 turnovers by their opponent. Both sides shot in the 47-percent range.

UNE had five players net double figures in the game, guided by Winston Bryan with 16 points. Kyle Lombardi supported with 14 points and nine caroms, and Zach Boulay contributed 13 points. Sam McElliott went for 11 points and eight rebounds, while Adrian Torres continued to stuff stat sheets with 10 points, six boards, five steals, and four assists.

At the start, Annus had five as the Hawks took a 10-2 edge. Boulay (5) soon led a 12-0 stretch in 3:20 by the Nor'easters, taking an 18-14 advantage. But RWU used the next 5:31 to embark on a 23-4 spurt and take a 37-22 lead; Higgins nailed three from behind the arc along the way. UNE did manage to reduce the deficit back to nine (45-36) by intermission.

The Nor'easters return to Biddeford on Wednesday to fact Wentworth Institute of Technology (7:30 p.m.).
