BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Suffolk University defeated the University of New England by a 70-55 spread as the first half of the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) men's basketball schedule wrapped up Wednesday night (Jan. 18) at Coach Beaudry's Court inside the Harold Alfond Forum.
The Rams (10-6, 5-4 CCC) shot 54 percent from the floor (27-for-50) and grabbed a 41-24 rebounding advantage to overcome committing twice as many turnovers (18) as the hosts.
Coming off the bench, Jake Gomez led Suffolk with 18 points and seven caroms. Aidan Sullivan tossed in 16 points and had five assists, while Cole LeVangie contributed 14 points with nine boards.
The Nor'easters (2-14, 0-9 CCC) were guided by 17 points out of
Winston Bryan.
Sam McElliott and
Zach Boulay registered nine and eight points, respectively.
UNE jumped out to an 8-4 edge and baskets by Bryan established leads at 21-19 and 23-21, but 10 in-a-row by the Rams soon provided some separation (38-27) approaching halftime.
Three-pointers from Boulay and
Kyle Lombardi chipped into the deficit early in the 2nd period (44-39), and an old-fashioned three-point play by McElliott reduced things to four (50-46) with 11:04 remaining, but a trey from LeVangie sparked an 11-2 stretch for Suffolk that left the gap at 61-48 with 6:54 left on the clock.
The Nor'easters are slated to entertain league-leading Western New England University (9-0 CCC) on Saturday afternoon.
