BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Western New England University shot 58.6 percent from the floor on the way to an 89-64 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) men's basketball result versus the University of New England at Coach Beaudry's Court inside the Harold Alfond Forum on Saturday afternoon (Jan. 21).
The Golden Bears, who are now 14-2 overall and 10-0 in league action, led the entire contest and pulled away from a seven-point game with 12:45 remaining. The margin had been 20 during the initial stages (27-7), only to see the Nor'easters (2-15, 0-10 CCC) get back within 10 just before the half (39-29).
Jayden Thornton helped the hosts chip even further into the 2nd-half deficit with six points in an 8-2 spurt that made it 54-47.
Pacing the visitors was Brian Geitner with 20 points that included 4-of-8 from downtown, and nine rebounds. Gavin Greene missed one field goal on the way to 15 points, while Jake Harrison registered 15 points, seven boards, and seven assists. Tim Restall collected a double-double of 12 points and 15 caroms, which powered a 52-31 advantage on the glass.
WNEU turned 13 offensive rebounds into 19 second-chance points, which contributed to the 34-for-58 shooting performance. The Golden Bears overcame a 13-of-31 effort at the charity stripe.
For UNE, Thornton tossed in 16 points with 4-of-8 accuracy from three-point land.
Adrian Torres accounted for 11 points and five assists, while
Winston Bryan supplied nine points.
Zach Boulay,
Kyle Lombardi, and
Zach Federico each contributed seven points; Federico also secured a team-high nine rebounds.
The Nor'easters will visit Endicott College on Tuesday.
