BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Sydney Iannantuono put down 22 kills and collected 14 digs to lead Simmons University past the University of New England, 3-1 (19-25, 25-18, 25-19, 25-19), in women's volleyball action Friday evening (Sep. 30) on Coach Beaudry's Court inside the Harold Alfond Forum.
After the 12th tied of the opening set at 19-all, the Nor'easters used five Sharks errors and a block to rattle off six in-a-row and get out in front. In the 2nd, Simmons gained an early edge (5-2) and extended to a 20-10 advantage, but at 22-12, the next six points went for UNE to make things a little interesting. However, kills from Kat Simeonidis and Iannantuono, along with a solo block by Meghan Doxsee, evened the match at a set apiece.
The Sharks (7-5) did not trail in the 3rd or 4th. Iannantuono had nine kills on 15 swings in the penultimate stanza, and the visitors had their low of four attack errors in the final frame to finish off the contest.
Joenissa Ortiz joined Iannantuono with a double-double for Simmons, totaling 12 kills and 21 digs, to go with a match-best four service aces. Jayla Parnell also had 21 digs. Simeonidis registered 40 assists and shared in four blocks with Doxsee, who notched 10 points between kills (3), aces (3), and blocks (2 solo, 4 assisted).
The Sharks were very aggressive on the serve, racking up 15 aces against 17 errors.
For the Nor'easters (3-10),
Lauren Davenport recorded a double-double of 13 kills and 11 digs, while
Addie Miller posted 19 assists with 12 digs.
Morgan Lynch and
Griffin Chaffin-Quiray were busy on the back line, accumulating 18 and 12 digs, respectively.
UNE will visit Curry College for a league date on Tuesday.
