BIDDEFORD, Maine --
Bella Reil scored on a free kick in the 35th minute and
Sydney Gillingham recorded an eight-save shutout to power the University of New England women's soccer team past Roger Williams University, 1-0, in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) opener Saturday afternoon (Sep. 17) at Barbara J. Hazard Field.
The Nor'easters improve to 4-2 (1-0 CCC) on the year, while the Hawks drop back to 2-4 (0-1).
Reil drew the foul that earned the scoring chance from about 30 yards out, and her left-footed boot curled around the wall before short-hopping the keeper and skidding five-hole across the line
[Watch]. It was the first marker of the season for Reil, who already led the squad in assists.
Roger Williams put five of its seven attempts following halftime on-target, but Gillingham was up to the task on each. The result was Gillingham's first clean sheet of the campaign, and fourth win in as many decisions.
The Hawks finished the day on top of a 16-10 margin in total shots. Coco Marrelli had three stops for the visitors in goal.
UNE is headed for Bates College on Tuesday.
