Monks fend off Nor'easters in five sets

Statistics

STANDISH, Maine -- The Saint Joseph's College women's volleyball team jumped out to a two-set lead but needed all five frames to edge the University of New England, 3-2 (26-24, 25-13, 22-25, 23-25, 15-12), at the Alfond Center on Thursday evening (Sep. 15).

The Monks (2-7) never trailed in the deciding period, and led 9-5 before a couple errors and a block from Kailyn Reilly brought things back within one for the Nor'easters. At 13-9, Grace Mueller and Viktoria Pavlyuk had kills around an SJC error to make it 13-12, but a pair of winners from Victoria Briones sealed the result for the hosts.

Briones topped St. Joe's with 12 kills and 26 digs. Nadia Sixto added 11 kills, and Maggie Sylvester notched 10 kills along with another 26 digs. Hanna Holden put up 22 assists and recorded 15 digs.

For UNE (1-6), Pavlyuk led the match with 14 kills and three blocks. Lauren Davenport went for a double-double of 10 kills and 17 digs, and Mueller tossed in seven more winners. Addie Miller joined the double-double ranks with 23 assists and 10 digs. Griffin Chaffin-Quiray paced all players with 27 digs, while Morgan Lynch accounted for an additional 17 along the back line.

The Nor'easters trailed by as many as five (11-6) in the opening set, but a block by Mueller and Pavlyuk gave the visitors a 22-21 advantage. Davenport had UNE ahead 23-22, however Sixto, Sylvester, and Hanna Webster snagged the stanza for the Monks. SJC was up 15-10 in the 2nd and rattled off a 10-3 stretch to assume a commanding lead in the contest.

But UNE didn't go away easily. The Nor'easters were behind at 12-9 in the 3rd, only to flip things into a 19-16 cushion. While the next two points went to the home side, a kill from Mary Haley out of a timeout kept the visiting group in front (20-18) on the way to getting on the board.

Saint Joseph's started quick in the 4th (4-1), but UNE soon began surging, all the way out to a 20-12 margin. The Monks were back within two at 21-19, and even one, at 24-23, before Mueller leveled the match to force a 5th session.

The Nor'easters will be at home for the very first time in 2022 on Saturday (5 p.m.), welcoming Plymouth State University into the Harold Alfond Forum.
