STANDISH, Maine -- The University of New England plated a season-best six runs right out of the gate on the way to an 11-1 triumph (6 innings) over Saint Joseph's College of Maine in the opener of Wednesday's (Apr. 20) non-conference softball doubleheader at Richard Bailey Field. The Monks overcame a couple early deficits in the nightcap to extend to a 13-7 result.

The Nor'easters now stand at 13-17 overall heading into a full home weekend of Commonwealth Coast Conference action, beginning Saturday (12 p.m.) against Curry College. SJC moves to 12-14 on the season.

Makenzy Herron singled during her initial at-bats of both contests for UNE, upping her hitting streak to 10 straight games.

It was the first time UNE head coach Kim Lorenc led the Nor'easters against her alma mater and former coach, Jamie Smyth.

The Nor'easters jumped all over the Monks in the top of the 1st inning of GAME 1 (UNE 11-1), racking up five hits and three walks as 11 batted in the frame. Abby Miner broke the seal with an RBI-double, starting her big outing of 3-for-4 with five runs batted in and three scored. Miner later pushed the visitors into run-rule position in the 6th, launching a three-run homer. It was her sixth long ball of the year, and brought her RBI total to 32, at the time.

Grace Tutt had a run-scoring hit in the 1st, as did Lindsay Joyal (double) -- her first of two hits, good for two RBI. Taylor Depot came through with an RBI-single in the 5th.

Megan Chamberlain went 3-for-3 at the dish, and Jordan Strum struck out five against no walks and four singles through five innings in the circle to improve her personal mark to 9-5.

Emily Eagleston only lasted two innings versus the Nor'easter bats, taking the pitching loss. Bailey Rassol drove in the lone SJC run with a hit in the 3rd.

UNE got out to another positive start in GAME 2 (SJC 13-7), as Miner knocked in the first of two runs with a single. However, the Monks responded with four in their half of the frame to move ahead, 4-2. Three hits, a walk, and a passed ball were compounded by an early error, resulting in three of the runs being unearned. A single from Olivia Howe and two-out double by Paige Connery accounted for the RBI -- for Connery, the first two of her three in the match.

The Nor'easters bounced right back, though, with three in the top of the 2nd. Singles by Kate Wilmot and Leah Berdeen set the stage for an RBI-double by Nicole Cacciola -- her first of two hits. Berdeen then crossed on a wild pitch, and Cacciola on a groundout.

But that 5-4 margin only lasted a few moments, as St. Joe's posted another four-spot to take the lead for good. Two more UNE miscues aided five hits, producing three unearned runs. Sylvia Foley, Rylee Page, and Connery all had run-scoring hits with two outs.

An RBI-single from Rassol was the middle of three runs for the hosts in the 3rd, as more errors hampered UNE. The Nor'easters stranded two runners for a second consecutive at-bat in the 4th, before Connery's third hit and doubles by Amaya Dacier and Lydia Goodnough padded the spread to 13-5.

A pop up in the UNE 5th looked to be the final out of the game, but it fell to the infield, allowing two runs to score for the Nor'easters.

Strum entered in relief of Wilmot and set down the next six SJC batters, with three strikeouts, but the visitors couldn't get any closer in their remaining chances.

Dacier, Rassol, and Ashley Emery each notched a couple hits for the Monks, and Meredith Pence picked up the win from the circle.

Herron joined Cacciola with two hits for UNE.
