BIDDEFORD, Maine -- With a five-run 4th inning, the University of New England took control of the second game against Curry College and notched a 6-1 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) softball victory at Nor'easter Diamond on Saturday afternoon (Apr. 23). The Colonels had captured the opener by a 2-0 margin.

The Nor'easters (14-18) carry a 7-5 league ledger into Sunday's home games versus Nichols College (5-7 CCC), which begin at noon. Curry moves to 6-27 overall and 2-10 in conference outings.

Grace Tutt doubled and scored in the bottom of the 2nd in GAME 2 (UNE 6-1) to tie things up, and then touched with the go-ahead run to jumpstart the hosts in the 4th. Tutt powered a one-out triple into the right-center gap and scored as the throw attempting to get her out at third bounced away. Tina LeBlanc followed with a single, moved to second on a wild pitch, and came around as Jordan Strum singled. A walk by Liz Scheurich and single from Lindsay Joyal then loaded the bases for Sami Groves, who plated two more on a double that one-hopped the fence in left. One more run off a sacrifice fly by Abby Walsh and the Nor'easters had a solid edge.

It was a all Strum needed in the circle, as the UNE hurler retired the final nine batters to improve her record to 10-5. Strum fanned three in the game, walked none, and surrendered two hits each in the 1st and 4th frames.

Curry got its one run in the top of the 1st, eventually converting a lead-off infield single from Emily Bussiere with a well-placed bunt single by Camryn Willis. A one-out double and single gave the Colonels runners to the corners in the 4th, but the visitors could not cash in.

Hailey King took the loss in 3 1/3 innings.

Each side only registered three hits in GAME 1 (CC 2-0) and went scoreless into the 4th, when Curry received a opening double from Madison Schwartz and then sacrifice/error allowed Schwartz to cover the rest of the ground.

UNE moved Taylor Depot, following a lead-off single, to third base in the home half of the 5th, but couldn't net the equalizer. Curry added some insurance in the 7th, with a double from Madelyn White and RBI-single by Lexi Buckner. Tutt began the last chance for the Nor'easters with a single, but it didn't amound to anything.

Caitlyn Wood secured the shutout for the Colonels, conceding just four base runners to the hosts. Wood also faced one more batter more than the minimum as she worked 2 2/3 of relief later in the day.

Alie Martell absorbed the tough setback for UNE, going six innings with six strikeouts while yielding just one of those hits and a pair of walks.
