BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Megan Chamberlain drove a first-pitch triple into the right-center gap with two aboard in the bottom of the 8th inning to give the University of New England a 6-5 triumph over Roger Williams University in the second game of a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) softball doubleheader Saturday afternoon (Apr. 2) at Nor'easter Diamond. The first contest was also decided in extra innings, 7-6, in favor of the Hawks.

The Nor'easters move to 7-13 overall with the split, while RWU now sits at 3-14. It was the first day of CCC action for both squads.

Chamberlain put up four hits and seven runs batted in on the day for the hosts, who travel to Salve Regina University on Sunday. Taylor Depot also notched four hits.

Both sides scored once in the 1st inning of GAME 2 (UNE 6-5, in 8); Roger Williams with three hits and an RBI-single from Maddie Predaris, and UNE without a hit. After the Nor'easters stranded a couple in scoring position in the 2nd, Chamberlain's other clutch knock of the afternoon shifted UNE ahead. With two on and two away, Chamberlain ripped her first career home run over the fence in right for a 4-1 cushion. [Watch]

The Hawks got one back in the 5th, without a hit, and prevented the lead from extending in the bottom of the frame, getting a line-out double-play to survive a second and third situation. Then, in the 7th, RWU touched for the two runs it needed to knot things up. Sydney Provencal had an RBI-double to plate the first, and she scored the equalizer on a groundout.

Errors allowed the Hawks to edge in front (5-4) in the 8th, but the Nor'easters wasted no time finishing it in the last half of the frame. With tiebreaker runner placed on second, Depot dropped a first-pitch bunt for a hit, without a throw. And the very next delivery was to Chamberlain, who sent Depot motoring around for the walk-off result. [Watch]

Jordan Strum picked up the pitching decision for UNE, entering mid-7th in relief of starter Kate Wilmot, who struck out four and yielded three earned runs over 6 1/3.

Isabelle Rosado had a game-high three hits for Roger Williams. Nicole Corey took the loss in the circle, working the last four innings.

Play was moving right along in GAME 1 (RWU 7-6, in 8), with the only difference through four innings being a 1st-inning unearned run for the Hawks.

The visitors crossed with two more unearned runs in the 5th, with a sacrifice fly by Provencal and an RBI-single from Rosado. But that 3-0 spread didn't last long, as Depot started the bottom of the stanza with a double and stole third. Alie Martell put the first across with an infield single, and then a two-out RBI-single from Sami Groves made it 3-2.

The Nor'easters pulled level in the 6th (3-3), loading the bases with singles by Abby Miner, Grace Tutt, and Depot, before Chamberlain hit into a fielder's choice at third.

Things got even more interested in the 7th with two away, as the second hit for Provencal was followed by a Rosado walk and RBI-single from Taylor Howell. Another free pass filled the bases, but UNE held the deficit at 4-3. The Nor'easters countered in a similar manner during their last chance, as a two-out single by Becca Dumont was backed up by an RBI-double from Miner.

An immediate error sent the tiebreaker runner around for Roger Williams in the 8th. Taylor Bigliani came through with a pinch-hit double to plate another, and a single from substitute Bay Naples later upped the gap to 7-4.

UNE kept battling with its back up against the wall, as a lead-off hit by Abby Walsh left two in scoring position. Depot flied out to make it 7-5, and Chamberlain doubled home Walsh as the hosts drew within one. A groundout advanced Chamberlain to third, but another groundout ended the rally.

Taylor Myers was in the circle when the Hawks moved in front and got credit for the win. Ellie Fleming started and finished the game, totaling six innings, and earned the save.

Strum fanned four and only surrendered two earned runs in the loss for the Nor'easters.
