WENHAM, Mass. -- The University of New England softball team scored four times in the 6th to jump ahead and pick up a 7-5 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) triumph over Gordon College in the opener of Wednesday's (Apr. 13) doubleheader at the GC Softball Field. The Fighting Scots captured the nightcap by a similar line, 7-4.
The Nor'easters (6-4 CCC) will carry their 12-16 overall ledger into a non-league matchup at Saint Joseph's College in a week. The results leave Gordon at 13-14-1 on the year and 2-8 in the CCC.
Trailing 2-0 early in
GAME 1 (UNE 7-5), the visitors tied things up with two away in the top of the 3rd inning, as an RBI-triple from
Abby Walsh was followed by a single out of
Makenzy Herron. The Scots didn't waste much time before moving back in front, though, behind a two-run shot from Arianna Ramsaran.
With one out in the 4th, UNE loaded the bases with singles and got one back (4-3) on a wild pitch, but stranded three without plating any more. That spread remained entering the 6th, and the Nor'easters made their move with two gone. An error and two singles filled the bases and another miscue allowed a pair to score (5-4).
Abby Miner came up next and padded the new cushion with a two-run double down the line in left.
Three singles, and the second hit each for Ami Rivera, Ramsaran, and Emma Dubois, produced one run for the hosts with two away in the 7th.
Walsh, Miner,
Grace Tutt, and
Megan Chamberlain all recorded two hits for UNE.
Jordan Strum notched six strikeouts while improving her record to 8-5.
Mara Little took the loss in the circle for Gordon, yielding three earned runs and fanning five over 5 2/3.
The Nor'easters struck first in
GAME 2 (GC 7-4), with hits from Herron and Miner and then a sacrifice fly by Tutt. But the Fighting Scots countered in the last half of the 1st on a lead-off home run by Isabella Rivera. It was the first of a combined six that traveled over the fence in the contest; Gordon sourced all of its runs off the long ball.
Solo shots from Dubois and Ramsaran made it 3-1 in the 3rd. Tutt started the UNE 4th with her first career blast to split the deficit, however, Lily Rivera clocked a grand slam in the bottom of the frame to increase the gap to 7-2.
UNE made some noise in the 6th, as Miner began things with the team-leading fifth homer of her rookie campaign. After a one-out single by
Taylor Depot, a two-out double from
Kate Wilmot tacked on another.
The Nor'easters worked a 5-4-3 double-play to get out of the home portion of the 6th, and
Becca Dumont recorded her game-high third hit in as many at-bats to open up the 7th, but the visitors couldn't get any closer.
Alie Martell was charged with the setback in the circle.
Emily Peterson and L.Rivera had a couple hits for the Scots, and Sierra Ricci had five strikeouts while collecting the pitching decision.
