WENHAM, Mass. –
Andrew Lawrence scored the game-winning goal with just two seconds remaining to cap a five-goal comeback in an 11-10 victory for the University of New England over Gordon College in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) men's lacrosse action at the Brigham Athletic Complex on Wednesday evening.
Tied 10-10 with just under a minute left
Colin Watt created a turnover to setup the Nor'easters final possession. Out of a timeout, Watt fired a shot wide with five seconds left. Lawrence brought the ball back into play off the end line and quickly buried winner to the bottom corner to give UNE its first conference victory of the season.
The Nor'easters (5-9, 1-4 CCC) found themselves down 10-5 with 3:54 to play in the third quarter after the fifth goal of the game by Kobi Bui. UNE dominated the remainder of the game, outshooting Gordon 26-1 and forcing 10 turnovers.
Watt and
Sam McGregor scored 19 seconds apart to cut the deficit to 10-7 after three quarters. Lawrence, who finished with a game-high three assists, found
Kyle Kennedy to pull the Nor'easters within two with 11:11 left in the game. Kennedy added another at the 9:38 mark to bring UNE within one at 10-9. Lawrence tied it up with 8:14 to play.
Gordon (1-8, 0-4 CCC) led most of the night and jumped out to a 4-2 lead early in the second quarter after a goal by Nicolas Flemmi. Goals by Watt and
Gabriel Martin tied the game at four with 8:44 left until the half. The Fighting Scots pulled away to close the second and led 7-4 at the break.
Noah Thies added a man-up goal, his second of the night, to start the third and give Gordon its largest lead to that point.
Ryan Hazard got one back for UNE before Marco Fernandez and Bui put the Fighting Scots ahead by five.
Matt Deyette finished the game in net for UNE, making two saves and allowing three goals to pick up the victory.
Alex Thoms made two stops in the first half. Colin Liscomb had 27 saves in goal for Gordon.
Cole Ventimiglia picked up three ground balls and caused turnovers.
Ben Gowell was 13-of-17 on face offs and had six ground balls.
The Nor'easters return to action at Nichols on Saturday at 1 p.m.
