BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The University of New England combined 11 hits with seven walks and got five shutout innings from Jordan Strum in an 11-0 victory over Suffolk University in the second game of Sunday's (Apr. 10) Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) softball twinbill at Nor'easter Diamond. The Rams narrowly took the opener in eight innings, 2-1.

The Nor'easters split a series for the second straight day, both times delivering a first league loss to the opponent. UNE (11-15) is now 5-3 in CCC action, while Suffolk (14-6) settles at 5-1 against conference foes.

Strum allowed a couple two-out hits in the top of the 1st inning of GAME 2 (UNE 11-0), but the Rams could only muster one more over the final four frames. The senior captain for the Nor'easters set down the last 11 batters she faced, and totaled six strikeouts against no walks on the way to earned a seventh pitching win.

Kate Wilmot topped the offense by going 3-for-3 at the dish, and both Makenzy Herron and Grace Tutt added two hits apiece. UNE sent eight to the plate in the 1st, scoring a pair, and then 13 batters saw pitches in the 3rd as the hosts tacked on seven more. Tutt had a two-run single to make it 8-0, and then Wilmot's second hit of the inning produced another run. Wilmot's first, a double, was the only extra-base hit of the contest.

Herron touched home three times, while Abby Miner and Sami Groves each accounted for two runs scored.

Suffolk starter Kennedy Reyes worked two-plus innings in the loss.

The Rams received a lead-off triple by Caitlin Murphy in GAME 1 (SUF 2-1), and the visitors had another in scoring position with one away, but it was the Nor'easters who impacted the scoreboard first in the last half of the day's initial stanza. A one-out triple from Herron was immediately followed by a single out of Miner.

After stranding two in the 2nd, a sacrifice fly in the 3rd knotted the score for Suffolk, but the visitors left two more aboard.

UNE threatened to regain the edge in the 5th, with a one-out single by Groves and a two-base error on the play. There were two on with one away in the 7th, too, but those opportunities couldn't be converted for a regulation result.

Lily Gustafson came through for the Rams in the 8th with an RBI-double for the lead. The Nor'easters appeared to tie things up in their portion of the inning as Murphy backtracked for a stumbling catch in center, but the runner tagging from third was called out for leaving early.

Jenny Jacob fanned six for the pitching decision on the Suffolk side. Bianca Luciano had three of the team's seven hits.

Alie Martell took the tough setback in the circle for UNE, also striking out six.

Next up: the Nor'easters head for Gordon College on Thursday.
