WATERVILLE, Maine -- Amanda Cabral led the way with four hits and five runs batted in as Colby College defeated the University of New England by scores of 9-3 and 6-3 in softball action Wednesday (Mar. 30) at the Colby Softball Complex.
Winners of five in the last six, the Mules move above .500 to 8-7 on the year. The Nor'easters slip back to 6-12 overall with the start of their Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) schedule on the horizon, as Roger Williams University visits on Saturday (12 p.m.).
Logan Luebbe got the hosts going in the bottom of the 1st inning in
GAME 1 (COL 9-3) with an RBI-double. While back-to-back doubles from
Taylor Depot and
Abby Walsh tied things for UNE in the 2nd, a pair of doubles by Payton Crowley and Ashley Ketchum restored the edge in the last half of the frame for Colby.
The Mules padded the cushion in the 3rd, as Luebbe's second hit led to a two-run homer by Cabral. Crowley later hit her own home run for a 5-1 advantage. Cabral plated two more in the 4th with a single, as did Abby Orso.
Makenzy Herron and
Becca Dumont singled and scored in the UNE 5th to cap the scoring.
Crowley struck out five and yielded one earned run to get the win in the circle.
Mackenzie Susko took the loss for the Nor'easters; in relief,
Jordan Strum retired all eight batters she faced.
UNE sent the entire lineup came to the dish at the start of
GAME 2 (COL 6-3)Â and snagged a 3-0 lead. The Nor'easters took advantage of three Mules errors and two walks, combining those with an RBI-single from
Grace Tutt.
It was knotted at 3-3 by the end of the 1st, though, as Colby received RBI-singles from Cabral and Grace Gouin before a wild pitch scored the third. A pair of two-out singles by
Megan Chamberlain and
Tina LeBlanc didn't amount to anything for UNE in the 3rd, and then a two-out double from Erika Macleod knocked in two to push the Mules in front (5-3) during the bottom of the stanza.
That spread held until the home half of the 6th, when the second hits of the contest for both Jackie Hill and Chloe Wilcox produced one more. Gouin and Macleod recorded their second hits in earlier innings.
Sam Ahlholm fanned three over five frames to put Colby in position for the victory. Orso registered five strikeouts the rest of the way to secure the save.
Alie Martell came up on the short end of the pitching decision for the Nor'easters.
