GORHAM, Maine -- The University of New England softball team tallied the first seven runs of game two on the way to an 8-3 win over the University of Southern Maine and a split in the local doubleheader on Sunday afternoon (Mar. 27) at USM Softball Stadium. The Huskies had a three-run lead midway through the opener and held on for a 4-3 result.

The Nor'easters are now 6-10 on the year, heading into a couple matches at Colby College on Wednesday. USM moves to 4-9 overall.

After UNE's rally down the stretch in the first contest came up just short, the Nor'easters struck first in the top of the 3rd inning in GAME 2 (UNE 8-3). A one-out, based-loaded sacrifice fly by Grace Tutt drove in Nicole Cacciola for a 1-0 lead.

Alie Martell pitched three solid innings at the start to keep the Huskies in check, and then the bats took off for six runs in the 4th -- all with one away. Kate Wilmot cracked a home run to right-center, which was followed by singles from Tina LeBlanc and Liz Scheurich and walks by Cacciola and Sami Groves. Then stepped in Abby Miner for a pinch hitting situation, and the rookie blasted a grand slam over the fence in center for a 7-0 cushion. Miner tops UNE with three homers and 14 RBI.

Wilmot entered the circle and retired the side in Huskies' 4th. It was 7-1 after the 5th, and that spread held until the 7th, when Martell started things with a single and scored on a hit by Tutt.

Three one-out singles in the last half of the frame gave USM a hint of life. A groundout and two walks plated a couple runs to produce the final margin, as Wilmot induced another groundout to pick up the pitching victory. Belle Snyder took the loss for the hosts, fanning five over 3 1/3 innings.

Wilmot and LeBlanc had two hits for the Nor'easters. On the other side, Lauren Miller, Kaitlyn Nelson, and Lauren Leidemann-Smith equaled that production for Southern Maine.

UNE had a brief advantage in GAME 1 (USM 4-3), after a lead-off double by Groves was converted into a run by Tutt. That was matched by the Huskies in the bottom of the 1st when the first of two hits from Nelson scored Miller.

Both sides left a pair in scoring position in the 2nd, and nothing came from walks each way in the 3rd. Then with two gone in the USM 4th, Leidemann-Smith hit a three-run shot to left-center for a 4-1 edge.

In the 5th, two-out doubles by Miner and then Tutt got one back for the Nor'easters. And the second hit by Abby Walsh made it 4-3 in the 6th, following a double by Taylor Depot. But the second hit by Tutt with one out in the 7th didn't amount to an equalizer.

Lauren Merrill notched the win in the circle for the Huskies. Miller had two hits in as many at-bats, in addition to two walks, and scored twice.

Jordan Strum struck out three in the pitching setback for UNE.
