EAST BOSTON, Mass. –
Eliana Kane scored in the closing seconds of regulation and
Meghan Hamilton won it in overtime as the University of New England women's ice hockey team battled back for a 4-3 victory over Suffolk University in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action on Friday night.
The Nor'easters (7-10-2, 7-6-2 CCC) found themselves down 3-1 after Suffolk's Maddy Burton scored her second goal of the game 2:33 into the third period.
Jenna Pych trimmed the deficit to one with 6:19 to play on a power play goal, with help from
Maeve Crehan and
Carolyn Curley.
UNE pulled
Delanie Corcoran out of net for an extra attacker with just under a minute to play. The move paid off as
Piper Desorcie found Kane for the tying goal with 19 seconds remaining. The Nor'easters kept the momentum going into overtime and Hamilton put in the game-winner with just 14 seconds left in the extra period. Crehan notched her second assist of the night on the final goal.
Desorcie put UNE in front to start the game with her seventh goal of the season at the 14:42 mark of the first period.
McKenna Remillard and Hamilton assisted to help the Nor'easters grab the early lead. Sofia Scilipoti tied the game just under two minutes later and it remained 1-1 at the first intermission. Burton scored her first 23 seconds into the second to give the Rams a 2-1 advantage through two.
Corcoran kept the Nor'easters in the contest with 59 saves on the night -- the second-highest game total in program history. Lily O'Neil had 23 saves for Suffolk, which falls to 16-4-0 overall and 11-3-0 in conference play.
UNE returns to the ice tomorrow night at the Harold Alfond Forum against Curry at 6 p.m.
