Nor'easters stay unbeaten in CCC, rolling Endicott, 80-58

Statistics

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Keagan Dunbar netted a career-high 26 points to power the University of New England in a convincing 80-58 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) women's basketball triumph over Endicott College at Coach Beaudry's Court inside the Harold Alfond Forum on Tuesday evening (Dec. 6).

The Nor'easters (7-3, 3-0 CCC) will now have four weeks between games, resuming on January 3 for a home matchup with Roger Williams University -- the only other squad without a league setback so far.

Before arriving at UNE, Dunbar tallied 748 points over 73 contests at Colby College. She exceeded her previous best by two on Tuesday, largely behind nine of 11 field goals in the paint. Dunbar scored or assisted (5) on nearly half of the team's points, and grabbed eight rebounds.

Four others found double figures for the hosts, including Jordyn Franzen at 15 and Kaylee Beyor with 14 points and nine boards. Juliana Tracey added 11 points, four assists, and four blocks, while Faye Veilleux notched 11 as well, prior to fouling out in 21 minutes of action.

The Nor'easters connected on a season-best 48.5 percent of their shots (32-for-66), and posted their largest rebounding margin of the year (+18) with a commanding 47-29 advantage on the glass.

It was the largest final scoring margin, for either side, since the second-ever meeting in the 1995-96 campaign. UNE (32-17) won the first two all-time contests by 48 and 24, respectively, and the next 46 were decided by 21 or less.

For the Gulls (3-4, 1-2 CCC), Tara Laugeni tossed in 24 points to go with six caroms and four blocks. Sarah Dempsey chipped in with a double-double of 16 points and 11 rebounds. EC had a nine-point edge at the charity stripe (21-12), but was limited to a 29.8 percent success-rate on live-ball attempts (17-for-57).

UNE only trailed after the opening basket, and it wasn't long before nine from Dunbar fueled a 16-3 run to build a 26-12 cushion in the 1st quarter. The Nor'easters knocked down 11-of-16 shots in the frame (68.8%). The gap briefly hit 16 (30-14) early in the 2nd, however Endicott registered the last six to close to within nine (38-29) at the half.

But UNE put things out-of-reach with a dominant 23-6 spread in the 3rd. Franzen led the way with nine of her points in the period, while the Nor'easter defense clamped down and held the visitors to a mere 1-of-15 accuracy shooting the ball (6.7%).
