WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- A pair of 3rd-period scores put No.8 University of New England over the top in a 5-3 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) men's ice hockey win over Western New England University at Olympia Ice Center on Saturday evening (Nov. 5).
The Nor'easters (2-0, 2-0 CCC) dropped 15 goals on the Golden Bears (1-3, 0-2 CCC) over the course of the weekend sweep to begin the league schedule.
UNE took the lead twice in the 2nd as
Collin Heinold found the back of the net at 1:22 and 8:35, only to see the hosts respond each time with goals by John D'Aniello at 3:13 and 17:44.
Jared Christy notched one just before the midway mark of the final frame, though, to give the visitors the edge for good.
Daniel Winslow added an empty-net marker for some insurance in the waning moments.
Shane Miller opened the scoring for Western New England at 5:53 of the 1st, kicking off his three-point outing. Winslow countered at 14:20 of the initial session to erase the early deficit.
Billy Girard IV logged 39 saves to backstop the victory for UNE, which heads for Curry College on Friday. Sharing in the team-high of two points with Heinold and Winslow were Christy,
