STANDISH, Maine -- Trailing 38-30 late in the 3rd quarter, the University of New England rattled off 22 of the next 28 points and came away with a 52-47 women's basketball victory over Saint Joseph's College of Maine on Wednesday evening (Nov. 16) at Mike McDevitt Court.
Jordyn Franzen started the Nor'easter rally with a couple free throws at the 1:13 mark of the penultimate frame, and the gap was cut to 38-34 entering the 4th with buzzer-beating layup from
Keagan Dunbar. After another basket from Dunbar, Franzen accounted for eight straight UNE points as the lead flipped (44-40), but back-to-back hoops from Jayne Howe pulled the Monks level. From there,
Juliana Tracey had layups to bookend eight unanswered that set the visitors in control (52-44) with two minutes to play.
Franzen finished with game highs of 17 points and 13 rebounds to pace the Nor'easters (2-2). Dunbar totaled 14 points and five boards.
Gabby Soter chipped in with seven points off the bench, including a last-second trey to give UNE a 27-25 edge at halftime.
The Nor'easters had led by as many as eight (16-8) during the 1st period, but Saint Joseph's shot 46 percent in the 2nd to pull ahead (25-24) before Soter's triple. UNE went cold in the 3rd, hitting just 1-of-10 shots and committing seven turnovers, only to bounce back with 9-of-18 efficiency in the final stanza.
Angelica Hurley paced the Monks (2-1) with 13 points and seven caroms, and Hannah Talon added 11 points. Jayne Howe and Nina Howe both contributed nine points; Jayne also had a team-best nine rebounds, while Nina registered five assists and three steals.
