Seahawks fend off Nor'easters in four sets

Statistics

NEWPORT, R.I. -- Salve Regina University overcame a five-point deficit late in the 4th set to secure a 3-1 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) women's volleyball result (25-21, 25-16, 21-25, 29-27) against the University of New England on Tuesday night (Oct. 18) at the Rodgers Recreation Center.

The Seahawks (12-8, 4-2 CCC) did not trail during the first two frames, but the Nor'easters (6-13, 2-4 CCC) started the 3rd on an 8-1 run. UNE led by as many as eight in the stanza, on the way to extending the match.

After a 3-3 beginning to the 4th, four straight points gave the visitors an edge. UNE pushed the gap to five on three ocassions (14-9, 21-16, 23-18), largely behind a combined nine kills from Viktoria Pavlyuk and Lauren Davenport. Three winners by Brighton Solheim and a couple aces from Makenzie Lee leveled things at 23-all, only to see Pavlyuk (before Solheim) and Davenport (before a service error) keep the pressure on the Seahawks. An SRU error had the Nor'easters with another set-point (26-25), though a kill from Madison Lee and ace by Kate Murphy flipped the advantage. Miscues both ways gave the hosts a second chance to close things out (28-27), and Madison Lee did just that with her eighth kill of the evening.

Solheim registered 21 kills to pace Salve, and Meaghan Corkery added 11, all with the help of 46 assists by Siena DeCicco. Corkery also had three solo blocks. Murphy tallied a team-high 12 digs.

Davenport and Pavlyuk went for 14 and 12 kills, respectively. UNE received six more kills out of Grace Mueller, and Addie Miller framed 34 assists. Davenport also led all players with 14 digs, while Morgan Lynch, Griffin Chaffin-Quiray, and Mina Regnery bolstered the defensive effort with double-digit totals of their own.

The Nor'easters return home to face Nichols College (2-4 CCC) on Saturday (5 p.m.).
