BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Nichols College picked up a 3-1 Commonwealth Coast Conference women's volleyball result (23-25, 25-9, 25-20, 25-21) against the University of New England on Saturday evening (Oct. 22) at Coach Beaudry's Court inside the Harold Alfond Forum.
The Bison (14-8) move ahead of the Nor'easters (6-14) in the league standings with the decision, now at 3-4 and 2-5, respectively.
Jayleen Fegan topped the visitors with 10 kills, five service aces, and 16 digs. Nichols, as a squad, chalked up 18 aces in the match. Ryley Plourde recorded 10 points, mostly from five kills and parts of all six team blocks. Luna Colozzo added seven winners, and shared in four of the blocks. Kya Burdier put up 24 assists, while Liz Diorio led all players with 22 digs.
For UNE, senior
Lauren Davenport notched a double-double of 16 kills and 10 digs.
Morgan Lynch collected a team-high 17 digs, and
Addie Miller totaled 30 assists for the attack.
Davenport came out firing in the 1st set, accounting for eight kills and six digs in the frame, and Lynch picked up nearly half (8) of her digs. With a string of four straight points facing a 5-4 deficit, the Nor'easters never trailed the rest of the period to get out in front.
Things were quite different in the 2nd, as the Bison jumped out to an 11-2 cushion. Nichols had 10 kills against four errors in the stanza, while UNE was in the negative for the only set in the contest. After
Viktoria Pavlyuk posted her sixth kill of the match to open the 3rd, the visiting side scored six in-a-row. UNE pulled back within two on a few occasions, only to see the Bison hang on down the stretch to take a 2-1 lead, overall.
Action went back-and-forth in the 4th frame, even with sizable runs both ways. Nichols went for six unanswered to go up 14-9, but five straight for the hosts left the Nor'easters on top, 20-19. However, a kill by Colozzo ended the streak, and a couple aces by Jenna Savoie flipped it right back. Davenport knocked one down to trim the gap to 22-21, but a service error and then two aces by Fegan put a wrap on the match.
On the day, UNE was hampered by 43 errors of various kinds.
