BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The University of New England stacked up a 27-5 advantage in shots and received goals from four different players in a 4-0 triumph over Curry College in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) women's soccer action at Barbara J. Hazard Field on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 1).

While early, with one-third of the league schedule complete, the Nor'easters (6-3-1) currently stand atop the standings with a 2-0-1 ledger. The Colonels drop to 6-4-1 (1-1-1 CCC) with the setback.

Just 82 seconds after Payton Gariboldi nearly put UNE on the board with a distance shot off the crossbar, bouncing almost straight down, Emily Martin found the first tally for the hosts in the 23rd minute. The play started all the way back outside the defensive box, and a lengthy through-ball from Lizzie Frattaroli gave Martin a chance to out-race a defender before slipping a shot five-hole on the keeper. Brooke Pierotti was inches away from doubling the margin in the 37th minute, but Curry goalie Hannah Correa stretched behind her to trap the ball right on the line. Shots were 12-1 in the opening half, and more of the same followed in the 2nd period.

It became 2-0 in the 57th minute when a handball in the box put Marie Hoehner at the penalty spot for a goal [Watch]. Moments later, a Brooke Coen header looked like the lead was going to grow to three, but the ball was blocked off the line by a defender.

UNE struck twice in the final 10 minutes to seal the result. In the 81st minute, Gariboldi stepped in between a Curry pass in its offensive half and her first touch sent Tori Keyes streaking up the left wing before banked a shot off the near post and into the far side netting [Watch]. Then, in the waning seconds, Lauren Beitler cut into the middle and connected with Karley Belisle, whose first touch created enough to whip a left-footed shot around the defender and past the reach of Correa [Watch].

Sydney Gillingham made the three saves necessary to preserve the shutout for the Nor'easters, while Correa ended with 10 stops on the other side for the Colonels.

UNE's final non-league match will be Tuesday (4 p.m.) at home versus Thomas College.
