PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The University of New England received nine kills apiece from
Stephanie Erickson,
Lauren Davenport, and
Viktoria Pavlyuk on the way to a 3-1 women's volleyball victory (25-16, 25-23, 17-25, 25-12) over Colby-Sawyer College on Saturday (Sep. 18) at the Wildcat Center on the campus of Johnson & Wales University.
Erickson also had a hand in four blocks (2 solo) and dropped in three aces to register a match-best 15 points for the Nor'easters (3-6), who ended their six-match skid with the result.
Adryona Miller added seven kills for the offense, which was paced by the 32 assists of
Addie Miller, who also notched four service aces and eight digs.
Paige Weatherbee was all over the place to record 33 digs, the fourth-highest single-match total within the program in 20 years. UNE had 64 as a squad during the contest.
The Nor'easters surged out to an 8-1 cushion in the opening set and never let the Chargers back closer than three (9-6).
Things were much tighter in the 2nd. After taking the initial point, and three to Colby-Sawyer, UNE assumed a 7-3 edge with the aid of five straight CSC attack errors. Aside from a tie at 11-11, the Nor'easters maintained the advantage the rest of the frame, although it came down to a Davenport kill to seal it at 24-23.
An 8-1 stretch in the early portion of the 3rd separated the Chargers from UNE, and that margin was roughly held through to the finish of the set, making it 2-1 overall.
Knotted at 8-8 in the 4th, the Nor'easters stormed to wrap things up, tallying 17 of the last 21 points.
Shaelyn Thornton had 11 kills and 15 digs for Colby-Sawyer (3-7), and Anna Allen posted 27 assists. Audra Fontes picked up 20 digs to top the defensive effort.
UNE returns home to begin Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play on Tuesday (7 p.m.) against Wentworth Institute of Technology.
