GORHAM, Maine -- An 11-2 stretch at the tail end of the 3rd quarter and start of the 4th provided enough separation to give the University of Southern Maine a 69-62 decision against the University of New England on Sunday afternoon (Feb. 28) at Hill Gymnasium.
The Nor'easters had a pair of three-point leads early in the contest, but trailed by four (13-9) after 10 minutes. USM pushed the spread as high as 13 (26-13) in the 2nd, only to see the visitors reduce things to seven (30-23) at the break, and just one (32-31) a few minutes into the 3rd.
It was still close (41-38) until that run set the margin at 12 (52-40) with 7:49 remaining. A UNE trey 14 seconds later halted the momentum, briefly, as Kristen Curley canned the Huskies' only three-pointer of the match on the ensuing trip.
Victoria Harris registered 15 points and four blocks for Southern Maine (1-3), while Michelle Rowe and
Mary Toman added 14 and nine points, respectively. Jackie Luckhardt totaled seven points, six rebounds, and four steals.
Allie Goodman and
Jordyn Franzen both notched 15 points for the Nor'easters (1-1); Goodman also secured seven boards.
Kaylee Beyor dialed up 12 points and a game-best eight rebounds, and
Faith Connors supplied 10 points.
UNE shot 48 percent (23-for-48) from the field, overall. After not making six tries from downtown during the initial half, the Nor'easters hit 6-of-11 in the closing 20 minutes. However, the visitors were hampered by 27 turnovers -- more than twice their opponent (13). The Huskies, meanwhile knocked down 42 percent (29-for-69) of their shot attempts.
The Nor'easters are slated to host New England College on Friday (5 p.m.).
