GORHAM, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine began the 3rd quarter with 17 of the first 22 points to erase a double-digit halftime deficit on the way to a 67-53 decision against the University of New England as the women's basketball season kicked off on Tuesday evening (Nov. 9) at Hill Gymnasium.
Trailing 33-23 at the break, the Huskies (1-0) received all of the eight points scored by Ashley Aceto during the initial part of the rally, and a trey from Amy Fleming with 3:39 on the clock gave the hosts their first lead since 5-3. The difference was five (45-40) by the end of the period -- USM shot 9-of-15 in the frame, with four triples, while UNE was hampered by six turnovers.
Southern Maine opened things up at the start of the 4th, moving ahead 56-43 as the visiting team couldn't quite find the range.
Fleming led the winning effort with 17 points. Victoria Harris added 12 points, eight rebounds, and three steals. Jackie Luckhardt had an off shooting night, but collected game highs of 10 boards and six assists. USM grabbed 17 offensive rebounds in the contest, and finished with a 44-29 edge on the glass.
Abby Cavallaro topped the Nor'easters (0-1) with 17 points, to go with four assists and three steals.
Jordyn Franzen went for 16 points and nine caroms, and
Juliana Tracey chipped in 10 points.
UNE notched six in-a-row to take an early 9-5 cushion, and a 10-2 stretch around the pause between quarters bumped the spread to 24-15. The final six of the half came from the Nor'easters, as well, as Cavallaro capped a 14-point opening 20 minutes. While the teams combined for 25 turnovers prior to intermission, UNE shot past the Huskies with 46 percent accuracy from the field (to 31% for USM).
UNE returns to Biddeford to start a four-game homestand on Saturday (1 p.m.), as the Nor'easter Tip-Off Classic gets underway versus Colby College.
