BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Nationally-ranked Bowdoin College topped the University of New England women's basketball team for the second time in 10 days on Tuesday (Nov. 23), with an almost identical score, notching a 62-51 decision on Court Beaudry's Court inside the Harold Alfond Forum.
Back on November 14, the No.13 Polar Bears (6-0) recorded a 61-52 result against UNE (2-5) to conclude the Nor'easter Tip-Off Classic.
Bowdoin logged an 11-1 run spanning the end of the 1st quarter and start of the 2nd, gaining a 21-8 cushion. Over the last six minutes of the half, though,
Allie Goodman outscored the visitors, 10-4, to keep the Nor'easters within striking distance at 28-20.
Then
Kaylee Beyor had a couple hoops to begin the 3rd as UNE sliced the deficit to just two (28-26). However, the Polar Bears accounted for eight of the game's next 10 points -- including five from Sydney Jones -- and the margin was 38-32 through 30 minutes. The hosts could not get any closer in the 4th.
Bowdoin's balanced offense was topped by Annie Boasberg and Tori Beck with 12 points apiece. Boasberg also grabbed seven rebounds, and Beck did all her scoring from behind the arc. Sela Kay added 10 points, while both Jones and Tatum Angotti contributed nine. Angotti and Callie Godfrey shared the game-high of eight boards, guiding the team to a 53-43 advantage on the glass.
The squads combined to make just 35 of 120 field goal attempts (29 percent), and each came up empty on at least 11 free throws (59 percent, combined). The Polar Bears did knock down 7-for-17 from long range (41 percent) and out-score the home side by 15 from deep.
The Nor'easters were paced by Goodman's game-high 16 points off the bench.
Abby Cavallaro dropped in 11 points, and Beyor went for eight points, seven caroms, and a pair of blocks.
Jordyn Franzen ended with six points and six rebounds, marking the only time in her young career of not reaching double figures in scoring. Franzen tallied at least 11 in each of her first 10 collegiate games -- in well over the last 30 years of the UNE program, two players posted double digit points in eight of their initial 10 contests (Melissa Roller '04 and Amanda Rodgerson '02), and no one had started with more than three consecutive.
