Polar Bears get past Nor'easters in three

Statistics

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Bowdoin College needed a late rally in the opening set to start towards a 3-0 women's volleyball decision (26-24, 25-21, 25-18) against the University of New England on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 9) at Coach Beaudry's Court inside the Harold Alfond Forum.

The Polar Bears (11-3) trailed on the scoreboard 35 times in the first 41 points of the match, but erased a 21-17 deficit with seven in-a-row. Sophia Pahl began the spurt with a kill and two aces, and Jaida Hodge-Adams added a couple more. UNE countered by fighting off three set points for the visitors, as a kill from Adryona Miller and a pair of aces by Viktoria Pavlyuk leveled things at 24-24. However, another winner from Hodge-Adams and then a shared block by Hodge-Adams and Cori Gray closed the set.

Play remained tight early in the 2nd. Bowdoin took the lead for good at 11-all with four straight, and soon a 23-15 advantage was too much for the hosts to overcome. The Polar Bears recorded their highest set hitting percentage (.237) to combat half (6) of their service errors, while the Nor'easters could only assemble an attack average of .029 -- their lowest.

Bowdoin gradually broke away from a 14-12 contest in the 3rd, nearly doubling up its opponent the rest of the way. UNE suffered from more than half (6) of its service errors coming in the final stanza.

Pahl registered a double-double with 14 kills and 10 digs to lead the Polar Bears. Hodge-Adams went for 10 kills in an offense that received 29 assists from Ella Haugen. Like Pahl, Maya White also had 10 digs.

For the Nor'easters (6-10), Lauren Davenport totaled 10 kills, and Pavlyuk tacked on eight more. Addie Miller put up a double-double of 21 assists and 12 digs. The defensive effort was guided by Paige Weatherbee at 17 digs, and eight apiece came from Morgan Lynch and Shiloh Osmer. Lynch shared the match-high of three service aces.
