Huskies slip past UNE, 3-1

Statistics

GORHAM, Maine -- Alizia Lagando and Brianna Delloiacono went for 15 and 14 kills, respectively, to lead the University of Southern Maine in a 3-1 women's volleyball decision (25-20, 27-25, 15-25, 26-24) over the University of New England at Hill Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 16).

After the Huskies (10-12) tallied 53 points in a sweep at the hands of the Nor'easters (8-12) back in the season opener, USM managed to pull out some very tight sets for the victory.

Southern Maine lost four consecutive points in the opening frame to trail 20-18, but registered the next seven out of a timeout to take the 1st. Lagando had two aces and one kill in the stretch.

UNE had the largest lead in the 2nd (7-3), and the edge late at 21-18. While the next three points went for the Huskies, the Nor'easters still maintained advantages as the sides traded the ensuing five (22-21, 23-22, 24-23) with kills. However, Delloiacono put down two for a 25-24 lead, and another following errors each way, to give the hosts a two-set cushion.

UNE got five in-a-row early in the 3rd (8-4) and never relinquished control to get on the board, overall. Things were close again in the 4th, though. Tied at 16-all, the Nor'easters looked to break away with three that included a pair of aces by Morgan Lynch. But the Huskies were back even at 19-19, and errors made it 20-20. Southern Maine countered a Viktoria Pavlyuk kill with three straight for the 23-21 lead, only to see another kill from Pavlyuk and a block by Kassidy Krejmas bookend a string that gave UNE a set-point (24-23). A service error negated the separation, and an ace from Sarah Haggerty before a kill by Delloiacono finished off the match.

Lagando added five aces for a match-high 20 points, and Delloiacono recorded 15 digs to post a double-double. Sophie Lindsay added up 35 assists and 16 digs, while Sierra Castonguay racked up 19 digs.

For the Nor'easters, Pavlyuk shared the contest-best of 15 kills. Lauren Davenport and Stephanie Erickson touched down four and three aces, respectively, to go with eight kills apiece. Adryona Miller had seven kills and a pair of solo blocks. Addie Miller lofted up 42 assists and collected 12 digs. Paige Weatherbee topped the defensive effort with 16 digs, and Shiloh Osmer had 10 more.
