Nor'easters net victory over Wentworth, 52-42

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The University of New England women's basketball team led wire-to-wire in a 52-42 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) decision against Wentworth Institute of Technology on Tuesday evening (Jan. 28) at the Harold Alfond Forum.

A 9-1 spurt to begin the 2nd quarter increased the spread to 20-9, and a triple to open the 3rd put the gap to 12 (28-16). The Leopards, however, strung together an 11-2 run while the Nor'easters fell a bit cold shooting the ball and narrowed the deficit to just three. The difference was four (33-29) entering the last period, which started with seven unanswered by UNE to restore a comfortable advantage.

UNE moves to 15-4 with the result, and now stands alone atop the league standings at 9-1.

Abby Cavallaro shared the team high of 10 points with Ashley Coneys, who reached double digits in just 15 minutes of action before fouling out. Jocelyn Chaput contributed eight points and six rebounds, and Allie Goodman added another eight points for the hosts. Sadie Nelson totaled seven points and eight boards, while Faith Connors posted five points, five rebounds, and five steals.

The Nor'easters overcame 23.8 percent field-goal accuracy -- which included 4-of-31 from deep -- by out-scoring the visitors by 13 at the line (18-5). UNE also had a 46-39 edge on the boards.

For Wentworth (6-12, 0-10 CCC), Erin Morton and Molley Duclos tallied 12 points apiece; Duclos grabbed a game-best nine rebounds prior to picking up her fifth foul late. Kayla Kelley supported with 10 points and Isabella Perez went for seven points, seven caroms, and six assists.

The Nor'easters head for Nichols College (3-7 CCC) on Saturday.
