BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The University of New England chalked up wins of 8-0 (5 innings) and 6-2 against Roger Williams University to close out its Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) softball schedule on Saturday afternoon (Apr. 27) at Nor'easter Diamond.
With the results, UNE (23-14, 12-4 CCC) locks up the No.2 seed for next week's CCC Softball Championship. The Nor'easters will host the No.3, No.6, and No.7 seeds for four games on day one (Thursday) of the double elimination tournament, before action moves to top-seeded Endicott College on Friday.
The Hawks (16-20, 6-8 CCC) will play the last twinbill on the league slate versus Nichols College on Sunday.
UNE seized control of
GAME 1 (8-0) in the bottom of the 2nd inning, plating five runs. The first two came on a squeeze bunt from
Anna Sessa and groundout by
Hannah Baldyga, before an RBI-single from
Ali Kuechler made it 3-0. A two-out single by
Avery Alberghini then set the stage for a two-run triple by
Caroline Schoenbucher.
A run-scoring single from
Taylor Depot added to the cushion in the 4th, and Sessa sealed the run-rule victory in the 5th with a two-RBI single -- still with no outs in the frame.
Sydnee Bessler notched the shutout in the circle, facing two more batters than the minimum on the way to win number 10. Schoenbucher matched Sessa's two hits, and
Andrea Gosper touched home twice.
Lia Nocella took the pitching setback for Roger Williams.
The Nor'easters took advantage of two 3rd-inning errors to grab the lead in
GAME 2 (6-2), and another RWU miscue in the 4th made it 2-0 for the hosts.
The Hawks turned three singles into a run in the top of the 5th, with Sydney Provencal's second hit of the contest getting the RBI. However, two more errors by the visitors in the bottom of the stanza reset the gap to two (3-1) when
Zea Macris tallied an RBI with a fielder's choice.
UNE padded the margin in the 6th. After two hits and a walk, a wild pitch sent a run across. Another free pass loaded the bases, but back-to-back grounders resulted in force plays at the plate. Then Marcis put a single up the middle to drive in a pair for a 6-1 lead.
Roger Williams made things a little interesting in the 7th, with three infield singles and a groundout to cut the deficit to four. Following the second out, a walk brought the potential tying run to the dish, but UNE pitcher
Melissa Sprague tossed in her third strikeout to end it and record win number seven.
Baldyga posted a team-high two hits for the Nor'easters, who received a couple runs scored from
Gabby Harrison.
Katrina Goria equaled Provencal's two singles for RWU. Alyssa Murray surrendered three earned runs in the loss.
Prior to the doubleheader, UNE recognized its senior class of Alberghini, Baldyga, Bessler,
Kaitlin Carson, Gosper,
Alexis Kapsambelis, Kuechler, Schoenbucher, Sessa, and Sprague.
