BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Bowdoin College notched 5-3 and 7-2 softball results against the University of New England on Tuesday (Apr. 23) at Pickard Field.
The Polar Bears improve to 23-10 on the year, while the Nor'easters slip back to 21-14 overall. UNE is slated to be back in action on Thursday at Thomas College.
After scoring twice in the 1st inning of
GAME 1 (BC 5-3), Bowdoin needed a three-run homer by Maddie Rouhana in the bottom of the 5th to regain the lead. Two walks preceded the deciding hit.
Allison Rutz scored for the hosts on the home run, and after her RBI-double that plated Karlye Pallotta during the initial frame. Pallotta had two of the team's six hits.
UNE pulled even (2-2) in the top of the 4th. Three straight singles began the at-bat, from
Zea Macris,
Andrea Gosper, and
Sarah Lachapelle (RBI). A groundout followed to score the second run.
Taylor Depot had a two-out double in the 5th and scored on a subseqent error to give the Nor'easters a 3-2 edge.
Samantha Roy picked up the win in three innings of relief for Rutz.
Gosper, Lachapelle, and Depot accounted for six of UNE's nine hits.
Melissa Sprague took the setback in the circle; both she and
Sydnee Bessler fanned three in split action.Â
Rouhana led the way in
GAME 2 (BC 7-2), as well, going 4-for-4 at the plate with three RBI and two runs scored. She drove in teammates on three of her hits -- a triple in the 2nd (1-0), single in the 3rd (4-0), and double in the 6th (7-2). Rouhana also doubled in the 5th.
Rutz, Samantha Valdivia, and Kasey Cunningham all supported with a pair of hits. One of Valdivia's scored Cunningham to make it 5-2 in the 5th. Ruby Siltanen, Pallotta, and Katelyn Cox each knocked in runs with singles.
Siltanen struck out nine and allowed one earned run in a complete-game win.
The Nor'easters trimmed a four-run deficit in half during the 4th.
Lachapelle led-off with a hit and eventually came around on a bases-loaded single by
Kaitlin Carson. The ensuing groundout pushed across the other run.
Jordan Strum suffered the pitching loss in three innings of work for UNE.
