BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The University of New England turned in victories of 3-0 and 10-2 (6 innings) against Wentworth Institute of Technology in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) softball action Sunday afternoon (Apr. 14) at Nor'easter Diamond.

With the results, UNE (18-11, 7-3 CCC) moves into a share of second place in the league standings heading into Wednesday's doubleheader at Gordon College (4-8 CCC). The Leopards slip back to 9-14 overall and 3-7 in conference matches.

Sydnee Bessler kept Wentworth in-check throughout GAME 1 (UNE 3-0), striking out nine while surrendering four hits and a couple walks. It was her eighth win in the circle, and third shutout of the year.

Things were scoreless into the 4th inning, when Taylor Depot put an RBI-single on the board for the Nor'easters. Another run came in the 5th, as Meg Harvey singled home Avery Alberghini after a lead-off hit. Depot then scored in the 6th on a fielder's choice by Gabby Harrison to make it 3-0 in favor of UNE.

Depot, Harvey, and Alberghini each had two hits for the hosts.

Kayla DeMedeiros took the loss for the Leopards, who received a couple hits from Brionna Myers.

Andrea Gosper notched a team-high two hits to lead the way in GAME 2 (UNE 10-2), and totaled four RBI after a bases-clearing double in the 2nd inning that made the margin 7-1.

After WIT left the bases loaded in the 1st, the Nor'easters plated four runs in their initial at-bat. Run-scoring singles by Zea Macris, Harvey, and Gosper, and an RBI-groundout from Kaitlin Carson, staked UNE to the 4-0 cushion.

Wentworth got one back on an RBI-single by Katie Verreault before Gosper doubled the spread, and Depot added an RBI-single to make it another four-run frame for the home squad.

Groundouts in the 4th and 6th added runs to the UNE score. Diana Roher came across with the winning tally following a lead-off, pinch-hit triple to the wall in center.

Alberghini and Caroline Schoenbucher both touched the plate twice for the offense. Melissa Sprague worked four innings from the circle to get the win, and Kate Wilmot maintained the advantage for the last two.

Ceilidh Higgins knocked in the other WIT run with a double in the 4th. Briana Beverly topped the Leopards with two hits; Verreault was charged with the pitching setback in 1.2 innings of action.
