BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The University of New England scored one run in the bottom of the 7th inning during both parts of its softball doubleheader versus Plymouth State University, as UNE notched victories of 4-3 and 7-6 on Thursday afternoon (Apr. 11) at Nor'easter Diamond.
The Nor'easters (16-9, 5-1 CCC) will now prepare for a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) twinbill at league-leading Endicott College (6-0 CCC) on Saturday. The Panthers drop back to 11-11 on the year.
Avery Alberghini extended her season-long hitting streak to 23 games for UNE, and established the program's highest single-season stolen bases total in at least the last 25 years. Already the school's leader in career and single-game steals, her 25th of the campaign surpassed the previous mark held by Wendy Atwood from 1997.
Caroline Schoenbucher led all players with four hits on the day.
The home team needed runs in both the 6th and 7th to come out on top in
GAME 1 (UNE 4-3). An pinch-hit, RBI-groundout by
Sarah Lachapelle pulled the Nor'easters even, and then
Schoenbucher slotted a one-out single through the left side to send in
Taylor Depot with the winning score in the last at-bat.
The first of two hits from
Gabby Harrison gave UNE a 2-0 cushion in the 2nd, plating
Anna Sessa and Depot after two-out singles.
Plymouth State answered in the 4th, as a squeeze bunt started a play where two runs touched. Ashley Deyo, who had scored one of those, tallied her second hit in the 5th frame to drive in one for a 3-2 advantage.
Sydnee Bessler picked up her seventh pitching triumph, fanning seven while allowing four hits and two walks. Depot finished with a game-best three hits, and Schoenbucher ended with two.
Panthers starter Caitlyn Miller struck out five without any walks in five innings of a no-decision. Jillian Aziz took the loss in relief.
GAME 2 (UNE 7-6) remained deadlocked through the 5th and 6th until
Zea Macris grounded out to the shortstop ranging towards second base.
Alberghini left that bag almost immediately, had already rounded third before the out was made across the diamond, and slid into home safely ahead of the throw from first with the winning marker.
Schoenbucher, Alberghini, and
Alexis Kapsambelis all had two hits for the Nor'easters. Schoenbucher plated five, including Kapsambelis twice, with a bases-clearing double in the 2nd (4-2) and a two-run double in the 4th that tied things at 6-all. A Macris sacrifice fly knocked in Alberghini for UNE's other run.
The first four by the hosts were unearned against PSU starter Kayla Mathieu.
Deyo posted another two-hit outing for the Panthers, and used those swings to net three RBI after a two-run single in the 4th (6-4). Hannah Seidner -- who also recorded two hits -- and Debra Morrill each scored twice, while Seidner started the 4th with an RBI-single. Cassidy Emerson had Plymouth State's lone extra-base hit in the match and later scored in the 2nd.
Kate Wilmot allowed one hit and one walk in three innings of scoreless relief to secure the win for the Nor'easters.
Aziz was tagged with a second relief setback for PSU.
