BIDDEFORD, Maine --
Avery Alberghini went 6-of-7 at the dish and scored four times as the University of New England took a pair of Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) softball games from Curry College on Saturday afternoon (Mar. 30) at Nor'easter Diamond. UNE led from the start in a 3-1 opening victory, and then plated four runs down the stretch to separate for an 8-4 triumph later in the day.
The Nor'easters (9-7, 2-0 CCC) wrap up their first week action since Florida with a 5-1 ledger, all coming on the new field. The Colonels slip back to 8-10 on the year, 0-4 in CCC outings.
Alberghini has now hit safely in all of her 14 contests this season. Saturday's performance upped her batting average to .553, to go with a team-leading 15 runs scored and 17 stolen bases.
Meg Harvey contributed five of the team's eight runs batted in.
Jordan Strum notched a win and a save in the circle.
Harvey gave the hosts a 2-0 cushion in the bottom of the 1st inning in
GAME 1 (UNE 3-1) with a two-out single through the right side. After Michaela Colleran drove in an unearned run with a double to get Curry on the board in the 5th,
Alexis Kapsambelis got a lead-off hit and navigated her way around to restore UNE's lead back to 3-1.
Sydnee Bessler fanned five over six innings to get the pitching decision, before
Strum faced three batters for her third save in as many games.
Alberghini's team-best two hits were matched on the other side by Colleran, Taylor Newcomb, and Alexis Buckner on the other side for the Colonels. Newcomb surrendered seven singles in a losing effort from the rubber.
Alberghini touched for the go-ahead run in the 5th frame of
GAME 2 (UNE 8-4), with a lead-off double and two groundouts. Then the Nor'easters tacked on three more in the 6th for some insurance.
Andrea Gosper doubled and later scored on an RBI-single by
Kapsambelis, who eventually came around on an error.
Caroline Schoenbucher, who reached with a single, extended the spread to four when Alberghini's fourth hit threaded the right side.
Strum totaled 3.2 innings for the relief pitching victory, striking out four with any walks and giving up four hits. Alberghini and Kapsambelis combined to go 6-for-6 at the plate with four stolen bases and half of the squad's runs.
Liana Duarte and Colleran had one-out hits and both scored to give Curry an early 2-0 lead, only to see an RBI-double by Harvey and run-scoring single by
Zea Macris tie things up for UNE in the last half of the 1st.
Colleran registered an RBI-single in the 2nd for a 3-2 advantage, but the Nor'easters started the 3rd with infield singles from Alberghini and
Taylor Depot and both stepped on home to swing the edge to UNE (4-3).
Duarte knotted the contest in the 4th with an RBI-single. For the game, Duarte and Colleran tallied three hits apiece, and Buckner chipped in with two. Carrigan Costello took the loss in five innings of action.
